Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of psychoeducation on knowledge and caring experience for the family with schizophrenia. The data were collected from March, 2001 to August, 2002. The subject of this study consist of 33 pairs of family with schizophrenia( I7pairs of participant group and 16 pairs of nonparticipant group). These families have patients who were diagnosed as schizophrenia. Participant group took this program, but nonparticipant group did not. This study is a non equivalent control group pre-post design. For 5 weeks, experiment group participated in group psychoeducation program for family with schizophrenia that met once a week for 2 hours. It was collected by using questionnaire for knowledge of schizophrenia and caring experience inventory for family with mental illness.
In the data analysis, a Chi-square test and were done to test homogeneity of general characteristics of subjects between experimental and control group : and Mann Whitney test and Wilcoxon signed rank test were done to determine the treatment effect of psychoeducation for the family with schizophrenia. As a results, it is identified that families with schizophrenia promote knowledge of schizophrenia and reduce nagative caring experience. Result: 1)Before this program, there is no significant differences in demographic characteristics, knowledge, caring experience of family with schizophrenia. 2)After this program, significant differences were found between participant and nonparticipant¢¥s knowledge of schizophrenia. Family knowledge of participant group was far more than nonparticipant¢¥s group(p<.01). 3)After this program, there is no significant differences between participant and nonparticipant¢¥s caring experience. But participant group tended to decrease negative caring experience of family with schizophrenia. Conclusion: this program is an effective intervention for family¢¥s knowledge and negative caring experence. Thus it can be recommended as a family psychoeducation program.
